Blower Motor and Blower Regulator Replacement

Replacement of the Climate Control Blower Motor and/or Blower Regulator is easy and straightforward. Unfortunately, the service CDs leave out a lot of necessary information. The steps and photos here are intended to recitify that. You may click on a photo to display a larger copy in a pop-up window.

During my vacation last spring, I noticed that I could occasionally hear some noise from the blower motor's bearings so I was planning to replace the blower. One day however, it just quit without warning. A quick look at the schematic in the Electronic Troublesheeting Manual left me with the question, "Blower, Blower Regulator, or fuse?".

1. Check the 30-amp strip fuse first. I repeat: Check the 30-amp strip-fuse first. Don't just look at it, poke at it. Fuses can develop hairline cracks that are invisible to the naked eye. Such a crack can cause intermittent failures.
2. Pop the plastic Wiper Arm Cover off. pull the two sides away from the wiper arm a bit and it should release. Then slide it toward the motor.
3. Remove the socket screw and with a little effort the wiper arm should pull off.
4. Pull up the moulding at the base of the windshield. Start at the outer edge and pull it straight up perpandicular to the windshield. Pull it up until you get to the wiper motor and stop there.
5. Remove the cover from the computer just behind the battery.
6. Remove the weatherstripping from the top of both firewalls.
7. I have no idea what this part is called, but carfully unclip it and remove it. Here is the clip on the right (passenger) side.
Here is the clip on the left (driver) side.
8. At the center of the forward firewall is a removable insulating section. As you can see, mine is in bad shape with a large strip of it missing. You can also see the four holes for the fasteners.
Here is the fastener on the right. It is a washer-shaped plastic nut. Simply unscrew it. The corresponding fastener on the left was missing in my 300E and I have ordered a replacement.
Here is the inner right fastener. It is a large plastic screw with a knurled knob as the head. Simply unscrew it. The corresponding fastener on the left was missing in my 300E and I have ordered a replacement.
9. Just below and forward of the windshield is an assembly of three plastic parts. The center section is the outside air intake for the blower. Outboard of the center section on the left and right are moulded channels that direct water to the drains on their outboard ends. These left and right moulded channels must be removed next.
Remove the screw here.
And here.
And remove the clip here. Then repeat on the left side.
10. Four screws hold the center section in place.

And here. The center section should then lift right out.
The blower housing and wiper machanism are now exposed.
